Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 21 - Do What You Love

"Quality, Passion, Consistency & Curiousity"
Where do I sign up for The Michelle Phan Club?
Check out this video of her one-on-one at The One Young World Summit

Life has been amazingly hectic lately, which has unfortunately disrupted my whole blogging flow, but I hope as things settle into a routine of sorts, that I'll be back online (at least for my normally scheduled programing)...

So what exactly has Shanis been up to?

It's not really a secret that I love beer, so a few months ago, in an effort to meet more ladies who dig craft brews, I reached out to Girls Pint Out. It's a non-profit organization that promotes community among women who enjoy beer as much as I do! I'm glad to say that about a month or so ago I became part of the NYC GPO chapter. I'm helping out with a little bit of everything from social media to event planning, and I'm super excited for what is already looking like a great 2015 for the NYC chapter!~

Que Lo Que Mi Gente?!
In other words, "How You Doin'?"
or just "Hi, how are you? What's up?"

It's been about a month since my last update, and I'm sorry I've taken so long to finally get back to posting. Between planning my trip to Austin for a friend's wedding, recovering from NYCC and a heavy workload, I've barely had time to binge watch any of my favorite shows on Netflix :(

BUT, I'm back and ready to get into the swing of things with another Wednesday Link Up

A little something cool and refreshing...

Kicking things off this week with some smooth sounds. I had the pleasure of visiting Casa De La Phony even before moving to Crown Heights, and have been a fan of these young artists since I heard their first tracks. Check out their latest music video for "End Of The niGht." Let me know what you think and stay updated on all their new music via Twitter (@PhonyPpl) and Google: +PHONYPPL

The #WednesdayLinkUp Continues...

My First 3-Day New York Comic Con Experience

Saturday, October 18, 2014

Missed Meals? Yes. Sleep Deprived? Yes. Broke? Yes.
Was it worth it? OH YEAH!

Just about recovered from the three day adventure that was New York Comic Con 2014.

I could go on and on about how amazing it was, but instead I'll highlight my three favorite moments!

Just call me Babs.

NYCC, Batgirl, Male Phoenix, Cosplay, Friend, New York Comic Con

This year, I finally followed through with my decision to cosplay! Since my first convention back in 2002, I've been dying to dress up and stroll through the convention halls in style with my fellow nerds, but money or just plain ole self-doubt just always got in the way! This year I made a promise to myself that no matter what the obstacles, I'd give myself the chance to pour out my creativity via cosplay. Despite not being able to get the Batgirl costume I wanted, I was able to pull it off and represent right! It's true what one panelist said at the "So They Said You Shouldn't Cosplay" panel, "For every one negative comment, there are 20 positive ones." People were so supportive, not only at the con, but on social media and even in person on the train/street/etc. Even my mom was excited for my dressing up last weekend! It was a great first experience and I really look forward to stepping up my game for NYCC 2015 ~ Challenge accepted!

Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 19 - Adventure Time Live Action, Afro-DBZ and more!

Wednesday, October 8, 2014

(cause let's face it, Thursday doesn't count...I'm hating.)

With my Hulu on the fritz, I've got to find other ways of keeping my geek satisfied, so I watched The Gritty Reboot of Adventure Time. (Wow, a live action that actually looks decent?!) And I mean, Adventure Time was once a lonely webisode on the Tubes of You that got picked up by Cartoon Network, so why couldn't this make it to the big screen? (or am I just delusional from not enough Gotham?) What do you guys think?

(source: Kotaku)

Also, I don't know about you, but the word "trippy" just doesn't sit well with me when it comes to describing cartoons like Adventure Time and Regular Show... does anyone else feel this way?  These cartoons usually make a lot of sense to me (read: Shanis is crazy. Run NOW!) Check out this article that talks about how Adventure Time is the trippiest show ever. (pfft!)

Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 18 - Making Onigiri, Defending Beer & More!

Wednesday, October 1, 2014

Welcome to another Wednesday Link Up!
But first, is East New York the new Bushwick?! ...

But enough about Brooklyn, let's get into Gotham
Last week the show Gotham made it's grand debut, but was it all worth the hype? I would say so... After that awful mess of a show they tried to sell me back in high school, I've been skeptical of any superhero TV series since, so imagine my surprise when Gotham didn't suck. There are so many stories in Gotham that I find it hard to believe directors keep focusing on re-telling the same stories! Why haven't we had some kind of Nightwing movie yet? Batgirl anyone?

A friend of mine insisted it's because people wouldn't be interested in a movie that wasn't about Batman, but I think Gotham is here to prove that theory wrong. Here's a story that involves Bruce Wayne but isn't just about Bruce Wayne. Fans will get the backstory to villains like Poison Ivy, Catwoman and The Riddler (to name a few) and even grow to love new characters like Jada Pinkett's Fish Mooney (I love her!).

Like any good story there's always that first shot that gets the ball rolling and, no surprise, that boom was the murder of Bruce's parents. Some ask "How many times must we see Bruce's parents die?" Considering it's the key ingredient in Batman's story arc, you better get used to it.

Now that I've poured my fangirl heart out, let's move along!~

EVENT: My New York Super Week To-Go-To Events

Sunday, September 28, 2014

New York Comic Con is less than a month away, and the nerd in me can barely contain herself. Although I had my heart set on cosplaying as Batgirl this year, it looks like I may have to step it down a notch and cosplay some version of Barbara Gordon instead (there's always next year...).

Aside from all the panels I've lined up in my schedule for NYCC weekend, there are some great New York Super Week events I'm hoping to add to my busy #geekgirl calendar! Whether or not you can make it to the convention, these events are definitely worth checking out!

Here are my top three choices!

  1. Black Girl Nerds Podcast
    I've been following BGN on twitter for some time now, but haven't had a chance to listen to any of their podcast shows until recently. I thought it only right to kick off the series out of order, starting with their "Nerd Credentials" show. Any nerd/geek can relate, but there's definitely something to be said about the Latino/Black nerd experience and the panel had a GREAT way of talking about all angles! Regardless of your race or gender, you'll find BGN's topics interesting and the panel discussions entertaining!~ During NYSuperWeek they're holding a LIVE podcast event that I'll have no problem shelling the $10 for! :}
  2. Geek Girl Brunch Presents: Fan Girls’ Night Out
Geek? Check. Girl? Check. Brunch? Yes, please! Really looking forward to meeting some great nerdettes at this event and having a blast!~

  3. The Art of Paigey! On the Stagey! This is NOT a NY Super Week Event
While NY Super Week's got its own burlesque event (see below), I couldn't pass up going to this sexy comic-themed strip tease event! I've seen a few of these ladies in action before, and it's only right, as a fan, to show my support. Of course I'll be rocking a little something special to the event (because watching the show is only half the fun!)
Here are the few other New York Super Week Events I'm considering...

Comics at Columbia: Past, Present, Future

Arcade breakfast at Dave & Busters

The Karate Kid 30th Anniversary Cast Conversation and Screening

Juan Epstein (Live Podcast) with Special Guest Funkmaster Flex

Sex Nerd Sandra Presents: Boning 101 Workshop

Costume and Game Play Party at Dave & Buster’s

RAWR! Burlesque in conjunction with New York Super Week Presents: Comic Con Vixens!

GIVEAWAY: Win A Saturday Ticket To New York Comic Con 2014!

Friday, September 19, 2014

Super excited to be able to host this giveaway! As you may or may not know, last week I won a 3-Day pass for NYCC and figured the best way to pay my luck forward was to give away my Saturday Comic Con Pass! It finally came in the mail this past Wednesday, so I'm kicking off the giveaway today (9/19 at 3PM EST) until next Friday (9/26 at 3PM EST).

Entry period has ended & winner has been selected.Read on for more details.

WEDNESDAY LINK UP// VOL. 17: Queens of KING, Jennah Bell & More

Wednesday, September 17, 2014

It's been so long..
that world seems cold... been so long... since I've tru--- Oh Stevie

Time for that weekly brain dump post I call
The Wednesday Link Up!

In all this chaos, I somehow managed to still find time to have a little fun. Last month, I got a chance to witness the magic of KING, this time as they headlined their own little East Coast tour. I even got a chance to speak to all three of the talented muses briefly after the show to congratulate them. (Check out this great DC write up about the trio & their LIVE recording of "Supernatural" for NPR in New Orleans! I will never tire, EVER!)

Opening for the queens of KING was the soulful Jennah Bell. I could go on and on about how amazing she was, but I'd rather let you be the judge.

*(Best version I could find, unless you've got Spotify)*

Since I'm running on a tight schedule this week (I told you it's chaos!), I'm going to give ya'll some good ol' bite-size link ups ~ enjoy!

Signing off and sending much love - Happy Wednesday!~

EVENT: NYCC & Brooklyn Brewery's Defender Ale Launch Party

Monday, September 15, 2014

A Perfect Day.

Brooklyn Brewery Defender Party
See more photos from the event on the Urban Inspirations NYC Facebook Page
Despite the hiccups - forgetting my Batman tee at home, getting makeup in my eye and almost losing my fun money - last Wednesday was the best day of 2014 (hands DOWN!)

Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 16

Wednesday, July 30, 2014

When it rains, it pours...

Life's been picking up speed lately and I've got a lot of great things coming my way!~ The only trouble is blogging as sorta fallen by the waste side while I work on solidifying these great opportunities, so please excuse the choppy updates.

In the meantime, here's a quick foodie type update!~ :}

The Boozy Brunch!

A few weeks ago I went on a double date with a good friend and his long time girlfriend; we had a blast! Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was amazing, AMAZING! (If you haven't seen it already, make it a point to go. It's literally /)OoO(\ all the way through!) Even though my friend and I were introducing our significant others for the first time, we figured watching a movie first and chowing down after was the best approach, so after the film we walked a few blocks uptown and grabbed ourselves a table at Big Daddy's.

MUSIC: A House State of Mind

Saturday, July 19, 2014

We interrupt this program to bring you an unscheduled post about the wonders of sound. Today's topic?

Ironically, right now while I'm typing up this post, I'm watching the show finale of HOUSE on Netflix.
(Damn those binges! Now what will I watch?)

My desire to consume music is constant, but my genre preference varies. Right now I'm in a bit of a house phase, so I figured why not share some of my recent favorites. Enjoy!~

LIFE: There's A First Time For Everything.

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Never had I ever...
gone to Coney Island as a beach destination
or worn a two-piece bathing suit in my adult life!
Pop goes that cherry.

Find this swimsuit & others like it at
I rocked the sh*t out of this "fatkini" a few weeks ago, and I like to think that the Shanis of 5 years ago would be so proud. It's been so encouraging to receive such positive feedback on social from strangers, friends and even Gabi Fresh (the brains behind the design)!

Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 15 - NYCC & KING

Thursday, June 26, 2014

Happy Belated Wednesday Link Up!

Life's been a little hectic (to say the least), so unfortunately I haven't had the chance to round up my favorite links and make them pretty for you guys, but I can share some bit of great news!

Urban Inspirations NYC is covering NYCC 2014!

Unfortunately for a lot of us in geeksville, earlier today New York Comic Con 3-Day tickets
sold out within the first TWO HOURS of their release (*sigh*).

The Bad News: Unless I get press tickets, I won't be able to cover a whole weekend's worth of geeky goodness.
The Good News:  I was fortunate enough to grab Saturday tickets before they sold out! (Yes, they're sold out!)

The other piece of great news?

Last week KING finally released a new single, "Mister Chameleon." This comes after their announcement last month of the album streaming party they're holding in LA tomorrow! (Got such Cali envy right now...)

Hopefully that means a full stream of the album will be up somewhere on the site soon (or NPR?). Either way, all I want is a damn release date for the LP! Come on ladies, you're killing us over here!

If you haven't already, check out the single and let me know what you think!

Will be happy to be back to posting regularly after this weekend!
Till then, have a great week & weekend!

Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 14 - Curtis Harding & Doughnuts in NYC

Wednesday, June 11, 2014

Despite the sinus congestion brought on by...quien sabe que, it's a happy hump day!

Since I'm a little under the weather, let's kick things off with something sweet:

Unfortunately last Friday I was unable to participate in the National Doughnut Day festivities, but that didn't stop me from celebrating on Saturday!

(Doughnuts from DOUGH in BedStuy. Brooklyn, NY)
I was first introduced to DOUGH a few months ago and was instantly hooked. I hadn't gone since because it's a bit of trek from my place, a good 20 minute walk, so it was hard convincing anyone to come with and as any sweet addict knows, you never wanna grab a box of doughtnuts alone! My boyfriend was finally up for the challenge this weekend and we got this deadly quartet of dulce de leche, passion fruit, hibiscus &  plain ol' glazed (upper left going clockwise).

Wednesday Link Up // Vol 13

Wednesday, June 4, 2014

It's Wednesday, time to do that link-up thing again!

Where Brooklyn at?

This week I want to highlight two local goodies - the Thunderbolt and Shake Shack's birthday!

Daniel Boulud's "The Piggy Shack" (photo: Evan Sung)
Normally I'm not a Shake Shack burger fan ( a SS malt vanilla shake tho? SO GOOD!), but these one-day-special burgers might be the exception! Next week Brooklyn's Shake Shack location celebrates it's 10th birthday (week!) with a special hamburger every day (there's even one whipped up by David Chang from Momofuku Milk Bar!~ ) The "crabby patties" will be $8.50, but if they look anything like the picture above, I got ten on it!

Check out the burger schedule & birthday week celebration plans here.

MUSIC/EVENT: Sweetlife Music & Food Festival 2014

Sunday, June 1, 2014

Three weeks ago I was part of this electric crowd - equal parts food and music lovers!

There are bodies as far as the eye can see, and this isn't even HALF of the attendees OR the main stage crowd. Usually people attend these festivals more for the headliners, but surprisingly this year I was all about the Treehouse Stage performances by: St. Lucia, Capitial Cities & Chromeo!

(photo: Joshua Cogan/Sweetlife)
Check out Urban Inspirations NYC's photos from the festival on Facebook now!

Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 12

Wednesday, May 28, 2014

Summer is finally here!
but not really cause Summer officially begins on June 21st... I digress.

BBQ season is in full effect!~ This past weekend, like so many of my fellow Americans, I enjoyed grilled delights - hamburgers, hotdogs, ribs - oh my! I also flew a kite for the first time in my LIFE! (I've obviously got a lot of rollover to-do's from childhood)

kite flying

Memorial Day Weekend wouldn't be complete without a little sunbathing, and luckily by Sunday the temperature rose to a high of 86 - Wepa! Prospect Park was completely camped out, but I still managed to snag a great spot with just the right amount of sun and shade.

summer picnic at prospect park Brooklyn

So excited to share all the goodies I've come across this past week, especially the trailer for Magic in the Moonlight, the upcoming Woody Allen film starring Emma Stone!

Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 11

Wednesday, May 21, 2014

Can we just pretend I didn't miss last week's Wednesday Link Up? :}
Just happy thoughts on this week's Wednesday Link Up!

Music makes you lose control!
Could it be? Am I actually excited about American music?! I've actually gone ahead and started a Spring/Summer 2014 playlist on Spotify and there are NEW songs in the queue. What are the singles that I'm currently gushing over?
So far, so good America ;}

More Wednesday Link Up Goodness?! Mmhmm.

Music Monday: Jazmine Sullivan is BACK!

Monday, May 12, 2014

Jazmine Sullivan is BACK!
Happiest of Happy Music Mondays!

I was really sad when Jazmine decided to step out of the music scene, and while it's taken me a few years to learn to appreciate some of her songs, there were quite a few tracks I was an unwavering fan of.

Stepping back in is not always easy, time passes and things change while you're gone, but she's on a JT-like track and recently dropped a gem. Does this mean all her following singles will be hot?  No, but I'd like to think that this proves she's still got that raw talent flowing in her veins. I hope she keeps on givin' it to us just like this!

Enjoy :)

Happy Monday!

The Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 10

Thursday, May 8, 2014

It's that time of the week...
Time to hook ya up; let it rain links!

For the love of food...
Cinco de mayo may be over but it's always a good time for a margarita. Switch up from the usual and try out this Tropical Mango Papaya Margarita recipe! ( I can't remember the last time I ate papaya, but this should get the ball rolling again ;} )

Anyone who knows me well has shared a meal or five with me, and they've witnessed my love for spicy foods ( right now my dreams are of hot pepper soup and fufuo ~ nom nom nom! ) So there's no surprise I'm a fan of sriracha and this sriracha graphic tee! It'll go great with the rest of my food-related clothing (thanks Pyknic!).

Speaking of fandom and love (turned obsession), two and a half weeks ago, I started watching Game of Thrones (yes, I know, FINALLY) and a lot of my friends expressed concern for my ability to catch up in time (Do they REALLY know me?). My boyfriend and I are so hooked, that we've already made it to Season 3! (Yeah b*tches!) ... Anyway, as most of my friends have guessed Khalessi is easily one of my favorite characters, so I was Comic-con-fan excited about this Khaleesi inspired burger I read about on adweek. (My "To Eat" list is quickly growing!)

Rolling along, here's a Planters commercial that made me giggle (more than it probably should). Looks like Planters is stepping it up a notch in the peanut department, and it might just work to get me to go to the store and grab a can for the office.

Wrapping up this post without breaking theme!

This week I volunteered at The Village Voice Choice Streets 3rd Annual Food Truck Event. It was a great experience working with other food (& beer) lovers! I met some interesting people and sampled some amazing food. Did you know there's a pupusa food truck? WHERE HAVE I BEEN?! I got paired up with the fellas from ToumNYC (Lebanese Food); check out the site and track the truck to try out their chicken shawarma (soooo good!) Despite how exhausting long my day was volunteering for 5 hours after a full work day, a free ticket to this year's Brooklyn Pour in September makes it all worthwhile!~

Till next hump day...
Happy Belated Wednesday!

LIFE/MUSIC/FOOD: Sweetlife Festival 2014, Here I Come!

Friday, May 2, 2014

SweetLife Music and Food Festival
With a slew of music festival announcements popping up, you can be sure Summer is not too far away!

The Sweetlife Music & Food Festival is no exception! This time last year I was planning my trip to Baltimore where I got a chance to see Passion Pit, Gary Clark Jr., Kendrick Lamar and Solange LIVE! They were all amazing and really rocked the crowd! Let's not forget the food - There were tons of options (vegan & vegetarian too!) The festival is equal parts music, food & sustainability focus.

With that said, I'm excited to announce that:

I'll be covering Sweetlife 2014!

This time I'll be going on behalf of my blog. Hopefully this is one of many music and/or food festivals
that I'll be covering on behalf of Urban Inspirations NYC.

This year's lineup includes Lana Del Rey / Foster The People / Bombay Bicycle Club / & more!
Check out this Spotify playlist // SweetLife Festival 2014 for the festival & prep yo'selves!

What festivals are you guys looking forward to in 2014?

The Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 9

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

Welcome to the Wednesday Link Up
It's been too long...

This past weekend, I was out and about with family and hosting sleepovers with my siblings. Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it to the Cat Cafe Pop-up Shop. If like me you were caught up, lazy or just downright uninformed, never fear! You can always sneak a peek at what it was like below, without having to wait on that long line!
(Heard about it on Gothamist.)

The NYC housing market is a MESS! UHaul trucks make a weekly appearance around these parts (mostly people moving out) - "The Rent is Too Damn High!" (truer words were never spoken...) With the price of even closet sized apartments starting at $1,000, this Tiny House Project is looking better and better by the minute!

Now that we're done with the amazing and practical let's move on to the ridiculous and indulgent...

MUSIC MONDAY: Gary Clark Jr. & Alice Smith

Monday, April 28, 2014

Yes, yes he is - Happy Music Monday!

Earlier today on Soulbounce, I came across an article that sang praises about the GCJ and Alice Smith collaboration on the mixtape version of "Please Come Home." As if that duo pairing isn't good news enough, I find out it's dropping THIS Wednesday (4/30) D. Nice Presents Blak and Blu: The Mixtape !

Big K.R.I.T. is also featured on the mixtape (He and GCJ were both featured on Talib's "Demonology" track); I'm excited to see what other artists lent their vocals.

Check out the singles below!

MUSIC MONDAY: "Dive Deep" into Tiaan's Debut Single!

Monday, April 21, 2014

"...TIAAN takes the adventurous spirit of Timbaland-era Aaliyah, the classy soul of Sade, and the futuristic feel of Jessie Ware, and blends them into a beguiling hybrid of seductive pop."
(via Facebook)

Timbaland-era Aaliyah? No kidding!

I know nothing about this talented Australian beauty but I'm already on board and ready for her next single!

I've made it an almost daily habit to rummage around the "New Releases" section on Spotify and look for the most intriguing cover, when and if I can't find any familiar names. I'm so happy I clicked on this!

It's going to be 60 all week ~ so have fun with this one kids!

Happy Monday

MUSIC MONDAY: Seinabo Sey // "Younger"

Monday, April 14, 2014

Today's Music Monday should be renamed to Motivational Music Monday

I know I've been flaky this month with posting, but I promise I'll have some pretty pictures of my day at the Cherry Blossom Festival down in DC this past weekend, up by the end of this week!

Today on I came across this amazing track. Everything about this track was a welcome breath of fresh air after a four hour ride from DC, a nine hour work shift and three and a half hours of sleep ~ phew!

It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:
"The trouble is you think you have time" - Buddha

Hope this hits you the way it did me :} Enjoy

Happy Monday!

Happy National Beer Day!

Monday, April 7, 2014

Beer. It's my drink of choice.
I'm a sucker for a good pale ale or wheat beer - yum

Most people hate on it. They say "That's for frat parties and inexperienced high school drinkers."
And I can totally understand where they're coming from - if Keystone Light and Steel Reserve were the only beers I had known, I'd reach for a rum and coke, everytime! BUT, if you really give it a chance and explore the endless varieties of beers that exist, I'm certain you'll find at least one you'll love!

Just yesterday I had a "Sunday Sesh" with the boyfriend at the Brooklyn Brewery! At 5 beers for $20, you're already getting a bargain, but then the guys sitting at our table gifted us their last two beer tokens!! Free beer? Lucky!~ Our Dos Toros burritos paired perfectly! That's one of the things I really enjoy about the brewery - it's BYOF!

If you're heading down to the Brewery anytime soon I strongly recommend  Weisse (Belguim Style Wheat 5%) and Hammarby Syndrome (Strong Ale 8%).

Here's a special little hook up for all you fellow beer lovers out there:

30+ "free beer" coupons to bars all over the big BK!

Oh and if you're curious to make your own fermented joy at home, check out these
starter brewing kits on - they've got everything from seasonal beer to root beer to hard cider!

Happy Monday!

Music Monday: Esther Phillips // "I Wish You Love"

Monday, March 31, 2014

I first heard "I Wish You Love," sung by Sam Cooke, a little more than two years ago, and it had such an impact on me because it was so relevant at the time - I had lost someone I loved and wasn't sure how to keep a friendship going with a broken heart. I remember wanting nothing more than to feel love as selflessly as the song described. I must have played that song at least 50 times that week. (I'm one to repeat a song I'm lovin' /guiltyascharged) Ah, le amour...

Just a few days ago, on a Newark Jazz radio station I often default to, I heard Esther Phillips' version of "I Wish You Love." I recognized the song right away, and that alone excited me, but her voice was just ... unforgettable. I quickly ran to Spotify & YouTube to find more.

It's the last day of Women's History Month and I haven't posted a single thing about it, so let this be my contribution. If you know nothing about this amazing voice, take a second to listen and if you do, I'd love to know which are your Esther Phillips favorites~

With the weather 50+ and rainy in NYC today, an Esther Phillips playlist is all I need!~

Did you know "I Wish You Love" was based on a French song? - You're welcome ;}

I hope you're all having a great Monday!

The Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 8

Wednesday, March 26, 2014

I'm hungry, I'm tired, I'm hungry. Is it Friday yet? Can I go home? - Today is just one of those humpdays!

Which is why the thought of going to FAB.COM's Warehouse Sale tomorrow, has got me in such high spirits!~ Will definitely bring my camera with me and try to document all the goodies I find :}

In continuing great news...
I went to the Meatpacking District's Warby Parker store today and picked up my new pair of glasses!~ It's been more than a year since I've updated my prescription, and it was about time I upgraded - frame and lens.
(They're the Durand frames, in case you wanna check 'em out for yourself!)

You know one of the things I love most about Warby Parker, besides their $95 flat rate and their customer service, is their humanitarian spirit. For every pair of glasses you purchase, a pair is donated to someone in need. This reminds me of the Bed-Stuy cafe I read out in Edible Brooklyn this month - ReConnect Cafe is a non-profit org that employs male youths from the neighborhood as a gateway (hopefully) to bigger and better jobs. Edible Manhattan highlighted a similar project where incarcerated youths are given a chance to work on food trucks - the program provides them not only with the experience to cook and serve but equips them with licenses and social media marketing and other entrepreneurial skills.

It was a relief to see that gentrification wasn't ignored in the ReConnect Cafe article, but it was a huge reminder that I'll be moving out of my beautiful Brooklyn apartment in a few months because of it - just shy of a year. Gentrification sucks, for the most part, but at least LNNY's video had me laughing about it today.

"Safety is great, until you can't afford it anymore."
Mmhm, das da wey da cooki crumbells.

Let's wrap things up with a song my dad put me on to this past weekend
and that I've played at least 20 times since then!

Happy Wednesday!

Belated Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 7

Monday, March 24, 2014

Last week I might missed the usual linkup deadline (Wednesday)... oops.

Will a Free Draft Beer smooth things over?
I thought so ;}

Before I begin, I'd just like to say that if camping looked like this (below)...
/le sigh - I need want a bag from this Herschel Supply Co x Liberty of London collab collection!
Herschel Supply Co London Liberty
Check out WTF Honestly for more info on the collection and browse around for other great finds!~

Let's begin!~
I've been busy checking off to-do's and haven't had the chance to see all that Table Hopping NY has to offer, but weekly freebies in the mail (for the past two weeks) gets a "so far, so good" from me! I learned about the site last week when Brokelyn posted up the Free Ice Cream coupon ( ... it's expired now).

But cheer up, free ice cream coupons mean businesses deem it warm enough to start enticing people to leave their houses via the promise of icy treats!~

If any of you were lucky enough you partook of the Holi parade in Richmond Hill, Queens earlier this month - but if you're like me, you missed it. Never fear, NYC has a way of making any time of the year appropriate for celebrating your favorite holidays! For $20, you can throw colored powder on each other and dance the day away (in JULY). It's a ways away, but f*ck it! Now you'll have cool Holi pictures to show all your Facebook friends just how awesomely diverse you are ;} Click & learn more about the Festival of Colors!

If I hadn't taken the pic in Bklyn myself, I would have sworn this was Japan! Love this lil fella!

MUSIC: Juanes Vs. Aloe Blacc, Pharrell Wins

Thursday, March 20, 2014

Music is boring me.

Does anyone else feel this way? Anyone who knows me knows how much I LOVE music, but I'm finding it harder and harder to discover contemporary music to add to my library. I'd love to add more artists I can actually look forward to seeing in concert instead of wishing I had been alive when they were around or old enough to know who they were.

Now I'm starting to sound like a hipster. #mybiggestproblemisfindinganewindieartisttolove #longhashtags

No, but seriously.

I should have been more excited when I found out that Aloe Blacc dropped a new album, since my concert experience a few years ago left me a fan, but his song "The Man" irks the bejesus out of me! Why? Because those 10 seconds where he's repeating the phrase "Well you can tell everybody..." I find myself finishing the phrase with "this is your song..." It's a little distracting because I can't enjoy the song properly.

Still, I gave the album a try and Lift Your Spirits, did not deliver as promised (womp womp).

So I took my chances with Juanes and, although Loco De Amor did my soul some good, it still didn't leave me completely satisfied.

Maybe it was the fact that "Happy" had been such a mainstream hit that made me skeptical of Pharrell's G I R L LP, but I'm not sure why because the only Yuna track I approve of was produced by "Happy" boy himself. Yesterday I finally hit up Spotify and gave it a straight listen through.

I give Pharrell all the props for knowing where his strength lies in terms of production. This album delivers nothing but sunny Sunday afternoon vibes. I can't vouch for the lyrics since I wasn't paying them too much attention this time around, but my style of musical digestion usually focuses on the beats first.

In conclusion, I'm adding Pharrell to my playlist and will try and have more faith.

What's on your playlist? I'd love some suggestions!

The Wednesday Link Up // Vol. 6

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

Happy Wednesday!
This 55 degree weather's got us jumping over Spring and right into Summer dreaming.

That reminds me, Summerstage is already adding to it's 2014 lineup. Bookmark it, it'll be a great go-to in a few weeks and you'll want to have first dibs on your favorites!

Want to kickstart this Link Up post with a picture of me at the playground a few Saturdays ago. I trekked it all the way to Downtown Bklyn from the Heights (Crown Heights), and this playground caught my eye.
Playground fun

Mostly because of these awesome chairs!~
Playground colorful

Now to the linkup portion of our program, served up in bite size one-liners - Enjoy!~

Last but not least:

The Wednesday Link Up // Vol.5

Wednesday, March 5, 2014

Before we kick things off, Happy Birthday to the oldest woman (and human) on the planet (that we know)! Otanjobi omedetou gozaimasu Okawa-san!~ :} Today she turned 116!

And now, on with the show!

A few days ago, "Mexican Boots" somehow became the topic of the conversation and that reminded me of this YouTube video - a nine minute (sneak peek of a) documentary about the history of the pointy boot style in Mexico and the music that evolved with it. If you're thinking "9 minutes?! too long; can't watch," then do yourself a favor and check out this track by DJ Erick Rincon at least.

Oh the things you'll find on YouTube.

A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I discovered this video on YouTube - How To Make a Big Mac. I'm still not sure why he clicked it, but what we saw was definitely NOT what we expected. Now, if your humor is anything like mine, you're going to find it amusing and click on to watch more videos, but beware this guy's sh*t is pretty disturbing... and so is his fan base. This is the only video I'd pass along, but watch others if you dare!

Although it's been weeks since its release, Pharrell's "Happy" still gets stuck in my head.

Speaking of the never-aging-bundle-of-talent, he's teaming up with UniQlo (unsurprisingly so) and coming out with a line of tees~ (YAY!) It'll be more of a brand//brand collab since Pharrell will be doing business as I AM OTHER, the home of Awkward Black Girl ;} I look forward to seeing the results of this creative teamwork!

Pharrell and Uniqlo Collaboration

I will finish this week's post with a quote I keep up at my desk:
"The trouble is you think you have time." - Buddha
In other words, make every move a power move :)

Happy Wednesday!

Belated Wednesday Link Up and Photo Dump Catch Up!

Sunday, March 2, 2014

The flu finally caught up to me. In light of recent family events, that's made it harder for me to keep up with my Wednesday Link Up posts ( sadface ). So let's catch up! Photo, link, photo, link - just like that!

Remember that Kate Spade bag I mentioned I got for my birthday? Well here it is in the flesh!
Kate Spade Michael Kors Bag Watch
Watch: Michael Kors // Bag: Kate Spade // Scarf: GAP // Sweater: Banana Republic //
Coat: Thrifted London Fog x Loro Piana
  • Even if I'm not a NOLA native, I'd be wrong not to take full advantage of Fat Tuesday!  Here's a King Cake inspired Burger that would certainly hit that Fat Kid sweet spot - now is only they had these in NYC. (/drool)
Speaking of food, here's a dish I made a few weeks back. Bow tie pasta is one of my favorites, but did you know that the Italian name "farafalle" actually means "butterflies" and that it's considered a springtime pasta?
Italian Eggplant
Breaded Eggplant, Homemade Marinara, Farafalle Pasta & Parmigiano-Reggiano
Back in December Kenneth Cole gifted me with a $150 Giftcard to to help inspire me during my Blogmas challenge of one post a day. I wasn't able to shop around until last month and a few weeks ago my packages arrived!~ I ordered myself two cans of Lavazza and am already dreading the day I run out! Although I swear by my Bustelo, this coffee doesn't need much to make it an instant perfection! A little sugar and cream, then stir. A cup of this goes a loooong way every morning <3

Lavazza Eataly

Last weekend I hit up the theater to watch RoboCop (I loved it) and afterwards walked down to the promenade for some basking in the sun, which surprisingly negated the wind chill a bit. It was so relaxing and just what I need after a crazy week!

Brooklyn Promenade

  • Warning - this link can be a bit disturbing - A woman who recently went on a vacation came back with an unexpected souvenir. She had worms in her body, but not where you'd expect. I don't want to spoil the surprise, so go ahead and click, if you dare! >:}

In case you need to erase that thought from your mind, take a look at this beautiful picture of lower Manhattan from the Brooklyn Promenade.

Stay warm!~

MUSIC: Michael Kiwanuka & Jack White Collab

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

A four day week ALWAYS feels longer than it is, but the first full week after drags on like nobody's business, which might begin to answer the question, "How the f*ck is it still Tuesday?"

When I'm in this kinda funky mood (thanks polar vortex!) I like to put on some good soulful music and who better to unwind to than Michael? I've been playing his latest single "You've Got Nothing To Lose," produced by Jack White (*fan girl scream!*), on repeat. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they work on a whole album together because this sound is a winner! (source: RollingStone)

Of course today's playlist wouldn't be complete without a little Kwabs in the mix!~
This is my favorite track off his recently released 4 track EP, Right or Wrong - Instant replay!

Good music = great mood! Happy almost Wednesday! :}

Wednesday Link Up: Rain, Stirfry, Tainted Love & more!

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Welcome to another Wednesday Link Up post! :}

This past week's been an uphill battle. It's been tough attempting to run full speed with sinus congestions, headaches, mild fevers and a sore throat - in other words, I'm in denial about having the flu. It's in times like these having an arsenal of "awwww moment" videos comes in handy!

I'll kick things off with this video of a little girl experiencing rain for the first time - always a good one to (re)watch. Not all of us are made the same, so if 2 min 30 sec of a baby laughing isn't your #1 choice and you're a little more techy, here's a video of a chorus of floppy drives programmed to play "Tainted Love."
Speaking of choruses, have you guys seen the chorus of Russian policemen performing "Happy?"

The Wednesday Link Up

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

I didn't get around to posting a Wednesday link up last week (Birthday haitus!), but this week we're back in action! :) Let's go!

To start how about a Cooking Mama and Hannibal mashup t-shirt! With the second season of NBC's Hannibal series right around the corner, this is the perfect shirt to rock on the night of the premiere! Speaking of charming manipulator and mind games, check out this rice experiment that shows that your thoughts can actually alter the physical world! I might just try this out myself! But if you're more of a observer, check out this YouTube video of someone else's experiment (and here's one debunking it!).

As for what's on my playlist, Spotify recommended some Funky DL, and it was a welcomed break from my current obsession - cafe jazz. Looking for some lyrics? Try putting on (Common's) "Nag Champa"for a smooth head-bopping vibe.

Everyone asked me what I did on my birthday and the answer is - RELAX!
(Pedicure, Shopping and Sushi to be exact ;})

On Saturday, I invited my friends to party with me at Mister H in SoHo.
Thanks to my Klout Perk, I was able to set up my event with the help of Host Committee
(Special thanks to Carli and Sara ~ Thanks ladies!)

I finally got a chance to rock my green lace Ivanka Trump dress - an amazing steal off ideeli!
And rocked it with a sexy pair of Black & Gold Jessica Simpson heels!~

And last but not least, on my birthday I finally got my first Kate Spade bag! I haven't had a chance to snap a photo rocking it, but the picture below does it justice :}

Happy February!
