FILM: Gimme The Loot Movie

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

I love "conversational duets" in rap songs, so it's no surprise that "Gimme The Loot" is one of my favorite tracks on Biggie's Ready To Die LP  (although that album mothers several of Biggie's best).

On Saturday I was chillin' on Amsterdam and 107th when I caught the movie poster at the bus stop - I was so excited! At first I figured it might be something similar to The Wackness, but whereas in The Wackness 90's rap was highlighted as an important part of the backdrop for this teenage love story, Gimme The Loot's focus seems to lie more on hip hop culture itself - primarily graffiiti - using the story of these two teenagers as the medium. That's probably what I'm most excited about, because for as long as I can remember I've been fascinated with graffiti.

The film just hit theaters about a week and half ago and is playing at the IFC.
Anyone else plan on seeing the film?

I'd also love to hear what others thought about The Wackness
(I will say this though, that OST's got some bangin' joints, courtesy of 1993.)

As a side note, I was gassed when I understood what they meant when they said "writers" in the trailer - a term I've encountered a few times in Raquel Cepeda's book Bird In Paradise: How I Became Latina. (A very good book so far, haven't been able to put it down since Saturday!) She talks a lot about 80's hip hop culture and how it influenced her childhood/adolescence in NYC - definitely worth the read.
