MUSIC: Hot 97 & Childish Gambino

Wednesday, December 28, 2011

Looking up some pictures of Funkmaster Flex for the 106 App right now and I came across this freestyle video. Last week on Friday he actually came through 106 and judged Freestyle Friday and next week Joe Budden will be judging. I'm always amused when I see what radio personalities actually look like in real life.
(FYI: In my opinion, Joe Budden's got the best freestyle in this cipher)

Childish Gambino was on the set of 106 & Park last Thursday and thanks to my amazing boss I was able to grab a fan photo with him. Check out his 106 visit and freestyle in the video below. Hoping I get to see him next year while he's on tour. No doubt about it, this isn't the last we'll see of Donald Glover.

LIFE: Christmas Presents

Everyone on the interwebz knows about the adorable dog named Boo. A really good friend of the family found this book at the store and gave it to me as a Christmas gift - by far one of my favorite presents this year. (I actually have it on my desk at work) I'm not sure that I'll ever tire of looking at all of his pictures, especially when I'm having a really bad day.

It's interesting how I've gotten mixed reactions to Boo despite my belief that this level of adorable-ness was unquestionable. Some people are actually creeped out by him while my grandmother is convinced this dog can not be real.

What do you all think of the adorable Boo?

DJ Wick-It ( photo // Japaneus )

Saw via Twitter today that Wick-It came out with a new album I first hear about Wick-It when he dropped the mashup album between THE BLACK KEYS and Outkast's BIG BOI (if you haven't yet, definitely check it out). This album is not such a direct mashup of two artists, but it does feature A LOT of different rappers (Bun B, YelaWolf, Notorious B.I.G., Future, etc) Can't really name many DJs I follow, but this is definitely one of them.

Check my two favorite tracks below and DOWNLOAD the album for free off his website.

Bang Bang - feat. Notorious B.I.G. and KRS ONE by Wick-it the Instigator

MUSIC: Stevie Wonder // "Light My Fire"

Been listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder lately and I fell in love with this album. Since I'm planning on getting a turntable soon, I'm going to snag the vinyl off Ebay in preparation. Looks like after the holidays I'm getting the place to myself for awhile -- ready to blast this on a Saturday morning.

I love this rendition of "Light My Fire" -- It's so very much its own song. It takes a talented artist to be able to pull this off.

Enjoy ~

LIFE: Dear New Yorker #1

Thursday, December 15, 2011

I came up with the idea to write one letter a week to the most annoying New Yorker I've encountered during the course of my week. Let's see how long I can keep this up - Let's begin!

Dear Mr. Conversation-Starter,

It's 10:30 at night, we're freezing our asses off at the bus stop and here you come disrupting the little peace we have to complain to us about how long the buses are taking - mind you, the bus you're waiting for, just passed two minutes prior to your grand entrance. Oh I know your little ploy, you complain out loud and make eye contact with the people around you. The poor soul who catches your gaze is now designated BEST FRIEND for the entirety of your co-existence.

And you know, we've all at one time or another sought out the comfort of fellow New Yorkers when we're stuck in shitty situations, like freezing while waiting for the bus, but we DO NOT need to know your whole life story.
You came from church, you need to pray to God to give you strength to deal with your weed smoking neighbor ... should I really know all this without even talking to you? Seriously dude, do you want a medal for discovering prayer? I'm glad I knew better and the second you showed up sipping your grape soda I turned and looked down at my hands.

If I had no fear of you going psycho and stabbing me, I would have said: "Please sir, with all due respect, shut the f*** up." You can't say this any politer in New York English, really you can't.

Oh and not that this matters, but that leather biker vest was really not meant to be worn over an OLD NAVY hoodie and some sweats. God help you.

Sincerely,

Your Fellow Bus Rider,
Shanis

Little cousin and I got a little photo booth happy on Saturday after I got my haircut ...

This is what happens when you get a 5 year old and 3 year old together - lol

We're quite the horror story pair.

About to sneeze...

She amused that there's 4 versions of us.

Thinking faces.

Let me humor her.

Caught in the middle of speech :}

MUSIC: Saori Yano // "Crazy He Calls Me"

It's late at night and all I think about is Jazz so I looked up some Saori Yano videos on youtube and came across this. I'd probably melt if I heard this live - I'm in love.

I think the best part about listening to Saori Yano play Billie Holiday is that I know she loves her just as much as I do <3

EVENT: Brooklyn Night Bazaar

Check out what the Queen of Spades found this week -- by the by, our new favorite place in NYC is Williamsburg ~ (No we're not hipsters... yet lol)

BOOKS: New 52 DC #4 Release Dates

Birds of Prey // via MidtownComics
Property of DC Comics

I've done quite a bit of research lately on Batgirl and I've been inspired to read some of the old comics, but I think I might start with the New 52's Birds of Prey comics. I've got quite the Batman Inc related collection going now that I've added Batman and Robin to it.

It's always nice to know when these are being released so your trip to the comic store is an easy IN and OUT.

So here's the link to Midtown Comics release dates in the month of December -- Release dates

On that note, which issues are you guys looking forward to reading? I really can't wait to see Batgirl's camo in the Nightwing comic this month and Batman and Robin #4.

LIFE: Herman Cain Quotes Pokemon

Wow, who would have ever thought that the movie I was so desperate to see when I was in the 5th grade would somehow be relevant to today's political news?

Oh Herman Cain, you were the Black male version of Sarah Palin and I'm going to miss you maverick ;D

Enjoy the clip!

FASHION: Shopping in Williamsburg

Monday, December 5, 2011

Saturday I finally got a chance to hang out around Williamsburg. I hit up my favorite brunch spot - Harefield Road (Metropolitan & Graham Ave // L Train  To Graham) with an old college friend. We met up with a friend of mine who lives in the neighboorhood and she was able to show me around to a few thrift stores/vintage shops.

The vintage varsity coat stood out to me instantly! It was the only one on the rack and just so happened to be my size. Mustard yellow and navy blue? Once upon a time I hated these colors because every school I went to rocked the blue and gold, but now? I'm in love. Sure the price wasn't exactly thrift store typical ($60) but it's extremely warm and most coats of similar style go up to $120! I love the hood too, it zippers open. I rather rock it that way anyways, since the hood has a weird pointy shape when you put it up. Below is the info for the store, for those interested.

Love starting my weeks off in a nice comfy outfit <3
