LIFE: How to make the most of your living space

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Overstock is one of the most talked about online furniture stores, but I have yet to buy anything off the site no matter how many good reviews I hear/read.

I think that I might have just found the one reason I'm willing to lose my Overstock virginity for.

Space is tight in NYC ( although it could be worse -- Tokyo ), so when you're trying to fit your whole life into a room, it can be quite frustrating and cramp. I'd really love a desk in my room, but with the amount of space I have at the moment with all the boxes I have yet to sort through, I literally have 'walkways' around my sh*t (pardon the French).

This is probably one of the coolest things I have seen and pretty damn perfect for my tiny (yet comfortable) box of a room. Although the price is not so friendly (to me at least) I'm putting it on my Christmas list or snag it for myself when I get the mula.

What do you think? What other kinds of space saving items do you really love? -- Currently I'm still drooling over my behind-the-door shoe rack <3

LIFE: Natural Disaster Week NYC

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

NYC Earthquake 8-23-11.

Last Tuesday, most of you know that there was a earthquake here in New York City - the epicenter of it in Virgina - with a magnitude of 5.8
A lot of us were pretty shocked and frightened while it was happening because this is not really something that most New Yorkers have ever experienced nor something we are really prepared for.  (First earthquake I experienced was in Japan)

Now while I know our little sway in the wind was nothing compared to many of the earthquakes that those in the West Coast experience, I found it rather rude and insensitive that many of the people that I know from the West Coast and other areas of the country were quick to call us "cry babies". Now here's the thought provoking part...
It was interesting then to see how my Japanese friends reacted to the news, quick to ask whether we were okay or not and concerned about the aftershocks that might follow. It was interesting to see that those in a country that recently suffered from an extreme earthquake disaster earlier this year were more sympathetic than fellow Americans, and I wondered, "Is that a culture thing?"

Are Americans supposed to have thick skin? Maybe next time there's a tragic shooting on the West Coast, us New Yorkers should pull out the 9-11 tragedy card. I think it is quite obvious from our reactions to the quake that we are not accustomed to a little shaking (i.e. we walked outside instead of hiding under our desks). I ask that next time people think about these things before being so damn insensitive.

I ask for your opinions - I highly value them.

FASHION: Pyknic "Food" Truck [Kickstart]

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Here's my chance to give back to one of my favorite brands and help them take the next big step in their business! Pyknic's looking to get a food truck to sell their food themed graphic tees on the go -- but they're going to need a kickstart and that's where we come in! Donations start at $5, but the payback gets better the more generous you get! If you know Pyknic, I encourage you to put five on it, but if you're not in the know about them, read my backup story below.

$$ DONATE HERE $$
I'm not going to lie, I'm really excited to finally get my chance to have one of their exclusive aprons!

The Chef
Why I Love Pyknic

Ever since I first discovered Pyknic in Karmaloop's Kazbah shop, it's been love at first site.
Now-a-days it's hard for me to find a brand that I am so die-hard about, but Pyknic's pretty much got my loyalty in cement. Who else do you know married the theme of food and the Lucky Cat so perfectly? Need I mention the quality of their clothes and shopping experience? Yeah, it's all worth it.

If I ever got asked to name brands that successfully uses social media, @Pyknic would definitely be among my top 5! Like every other brand out there, they are constantly promoting themselves, but what sets them apart is their ability to form relationships with their consumers.
You might respond to this and say "Well, they just don't have as many consumers as bigger brands," -- but the truth is that I've gotten replies from brands like GAP and Chipotle before.

As a social media fanatic, I appreciate the love I get from the guys over at Pyknic.
Recently [on twitter] I asked them about possibly making a shopping tote for my groceries -- well guess what "Wish Granted" -- they've added it as one of the many prizes you get when you donate to their kickstart project and I gotta be honest with you, I'm surprised at how much they are giving away for even the smallest donations!
Use my name? - Get dem brownie points :]

Here's to hoping they make half their goal in the next week!

FILM: New York International Latino Film Festival

Thursday, August 18, 2011

Two years ago I went to the New York Latino International Film Festival and watched a John Leguizamo film -- he was there at the premiere and I even got to meet him!

Yesterday, via remezcla.com, I found out that NYLIFF started this week on Tuesday. The animated film Chico Y Rita is the first ever animated film to open the Festival. I wish I could have gotten tickets to the opening, but I have a few more days left to enjoy the other Latino films.

Check out the trailer of the movie below and a full list of the films at the official site (above)!

FASHION: Crew Necks Galore.

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

I love fall fashion!  It's probably my favorite season - fashion wise. Layers, layers, layers! Cool crisp sunny days are the epitome of perfect fall days.

I just bought the Fall fashion issue of Elle magazine to peruse on my train ride home today so that I can take a look at what sorts of pieces I'll be looking to add to my wardrobe this fall. Since animal prints (especially leopard) are back in style, I'm glad I can add the sweater I bought from Japan in '09 back into my everyday outfits this fall.

I'm really excited to see what crewnecks Pyknic comes out with this Fall, especially since I wasn't able to snag one from their Fall 2010 collection. The one featured above is from Karmaloop's Kazbah section of the site -- Brand: Adapt Advancers The brand reps the West Coast hard, but even an East Coaster like me can appreciate it. Use repcode TENOLI to get 20% off your first order -- good lookin' especially since promo codes don't work on Kazbah purchases.

Earlier weather from this week suggests that Fall might be a little closer than we think  :)

TECHNOLOGY: Blogger Android App

Monday, August 15, 2011

I gotta tell you, one of the things I most excited about when I first got my Andriod was FINALLY being able to blog on the go, but lately my Blogger App has been acting up and not publishing ANY of my posts and so in a fit of rage I actually deleted it.

Now, I might give it another chance since I realize now that I miss it, but there are quite a few things that I really hope that the developers fix in their future builds of it -- here are some suggestions:

  • I'd like to be able to dictate where the image goes
  • Please let me see what kinds of labels I already have set up -- how about letting me check off which ones I'd like to add to my post?
Hmm, I can only think of the previous two. Anyone else have problems/suggestions with their Blogger App?

FASHION: Target's Varsity Vintage Collection

Saturday, August 13, 2011

A few weeks ago Target came out with their Vintage Varsity Collection and I was really excited about this since I first saw the ad for it in COSMO.
I will say that I  am a bit disappointed with the women's half of the collection because I admit that I'm not really feeling the graphics but I do love the oxford tote and the infinity scarves.

So I'm heading to Target at some point this weekend to pick up the following:

Oxford Tote $20 -- Click Here
Infinity scarf $17 -- Click Here

Men's Fleece Top $17 -- Click Here
Special shoutout to my coworker Tiffany who is always encouraging me to find these great buys in places I never bothered looking.

BTW, I will update on my recent IDEELI purchases and review the site's services, etc in one of the next few posts.

FASHION: Sally Hanson Salon Effects

Thursday, August 11, 2011

Recently, I realized that I never actually reviewed the Sally Hansen Salon Nail Effects Strips.

I did wear them once a few months ago for my birthday and I was pleased with how easy they were to put on and how long they lasted, but the experience must vary with color/pattern because last night I had the worst experience with the pink sparkle pattern.

The left hand gave me no trouble, but the strips I used on the right hand refused to stick and I had to use my dry fast top coat polish to get it to stick down to the nail. Despite the "chipping" effect I got on 2/5 nails, the sparkle distracts from the imperfections and it doesn't look as bad as I thought.

I'm not boycotting because there's at least two more patterns I really want to try -- maybe they have to be fresh (this package was already 6 months old).

We'll see what happens and I'll definitely keep you posted.

ART: MOB x KRINK

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

I admit that after watching Exit Through The Gift Shop I felt inspired to draw again and even add a little street art of my own out into the world.

Talking to @_atomsk the next day about it brought up the topic of tagging, slapping, bombing, etc and he suddenly remembered that MOB x KRINK had collaborated awhile ago to create this:

Now this is the kind of marker a fly femme should be using to tag up local stop signs :)
Click HERE to buy the it!

Oh and while we're on the MTTM (MOB) subject, I want to send out a special shoutout to @LeahMOB for letting me take part in the G-Shock/CASIO focus group she held a few weeks ago. Great big THANK YOU to her and CASIO for gifting me with a MTTM x Baby-G -- I've been rocking it any chance I get.

I'm making a greater effort to carry around my sketchbook now so that I'll have a chance to put down any ideas that come into my head :) More updates on it later.

LIFE: Bloated.

This has to be the worst feeling ever -- the feeling of being bloated.

Now I'm feeling guilty about that pizza I just ate and that croissant that's in my bag waiting for me. It feels like I need to work out for 5 days straight before I can start feeling a little better.

FYI according to these ads, milk helps with PMS. Despite the offense women felt upon seeing these, I think the info is actually quite useful -- thanks advertising :)

Gay Marriage Ads in NYC

Thursday, August 4, 2011

Manhattan Mini Storage has some of the best ads on the subway, but this is the first ever to make me laugh out loud (yes I actually lol-ed).
Since gay marriage was legalized more and more companies have openly advertised their support and it's always nice to see how creative it gets.

Anyone else got a subway ad they're really loving right now?

"If you don't like gay marriage, don't get gay married."
